Stonington Education Fund Gives
$24000 to Mini-Grants, Apple Grants and Music Program Enrichment
The SEF board of directors
voted to fund $4798 worth of teacher mini-grants in October 2007.
Mini-grants are evaluated and recommended annually by the school
department’s Career Incentive Committee. A list of mini-grants follows.
The SEF also voted to
provide almost $9000 to purchase a variety of musical equipment and
programs for the entire school district’s music program. Combining this
with last year’s grant of $11220, the SEF has provided over $20000 to
the town-wide music department! It is through the generosity of Mark and
Christine Kepple’s organizing efforts that the Stockroom’s Blue
Mondays Concert Series, held in the Mystic River Park in the summer
months, raised the money for musical enrichment.
In the fall of 2007, the
SEF approved two grants. The first grant was facilitated by Marika
Heughins and Tina Eisenbeis, co-teachers of the PFISH 5/6 multiage
looping classroom at PMS. The grant funded a multi-media station valued
at $4389. The second grant, “ I See You – Language Through the Lens”,
was written by foreign language teachers Joyce Chase and Eileen Fiore,
both at MMS and PMS. The grant of $2489 provides for digital video
cameras and programs to capture middle school French and Spanish class
language experiences.
In the spring of 2008, the
SEF awarded nearly $3500 to a team of teachers at MMS to fund a cooking
classroom that will integrate many academic disciplines and teach life
skills in a fun, hands on environment.
